HOW TO PREPARE EFFECTIVE 504 PLANSMany schools are unfamiliar or only vaguely familiar with Section 504. This is VERY unfortunate, since most ADHD children can do just fine with a "good" 504 Plan. However, a really good 504 Plan seems hard-to-come-by, in my experience. Many 504 Plans are written in a similar style as an IEP. The student’s problems are described, the "goals" are written that describe what the student is expected to achieve by year’s end. Occasionally, some strategies (solutions) are spelled-out, but often those noted as responsible for the strategies are either the student or the parent (rarely any school personnel). These days, parents are more educated and aware of their child’s needs. They want to see problem descriptions that make sense to them, that don’t represent excessive emphasis on negatives. Next, they want to hear solutions that are clearly, likely to impact the respective problem; and, solutions that are "evidence-based". Most of all, they want to have the feeling that the school is taking professional responsibility (and accountability) for the remediation process. What I have designed is a tool that puts into operational language the spirit as well as the intent of Section 504. It guides the educator toward developing solution strategies that are "common sense" and that have a solid foundation in research as well as practical experience. The more a 504 Plan "makes sense" to parents and "fits" for their child, the more likely will endorse it and function as a "team-player" as the Plan is put into effect during the school year.
